In our first Geography lesson, we were studying the countries in Europe. We began by being given a European country and, in groups, had to carry out research into the physical and human characteristics of that country. Amongst other things, we looked at mountain ranges, rivers, lakes for the physical characteristics and then the population, architecture, bridges, cities to identify the human characteristics of the country. Here are our finsihed results.

In class, we have been learning the skills for building tension in our writing. We worked together in small groups to plan and write a narrative. We had to use a range of different sentence structures and we showed this by writing in different coloured pens. We then used our editing skills to improve it. Can you feel the tension in our writing?

Following on from our work on classifying animals, we looked at classifying plants. We discovered that Carl Linnaeus developed the modern system for classifying and naming organisms. Before him, they were really long, but he gave each one a two-part name. Here is the work that we completed.

As an introduction to our new topic, we created a message in a bottle. The images show the damage pollution is doing to our oceans and we added our own message. Here are some of ours.

In Art, we have been working really hard to create a sarcophagus out of clay. We had to learn the skills for working effectively with clay and then used those skills to make our sarcophagus. We also had to design a lid and, if we had time, we could make a mummy to go inside our sarcophagus. We had a lot of fun and, I am sure you will agree, they all look absolutely amazing. 

In D&T, we learnt how a shaduf works and why the Ancient Egyptians used them. We then worked in pairs to design and build our own shaduf. Here are our finished Shadufs.

The children watched a video showing the story of Howard Carter and his efforts to find the tomb of King Tutankhamun. Once watched, the children had to create a comic strip using the key facts of the discovery. Here are som eof our finished comic strips.

In groups, we had to research one of the main time periods of Ancient Egypt. We worked in different classrooms to  complete our work. Once it was finished, we had to go back to our own class and present our work to everyone else. Here is our finished work from all three groups.

In Art, we have been working really hard on our sewing skills. We began by testing our skills on a small square of felt, becoming familiar with the techniques of cross stitch, straight stitch, running stitch, back stitch and satin stitch. When we had got the hang of it, we designed and then completed our cat project. Here are our end results.

In English, we have been working on perfecting our instructions. We looked at a range of instructions before writing the instructions for making papyrus paper. Finally, we had to write a set of instructions on how to mummify a body. 

Facing a dilemma, the pharaoh wanted to dam the River Nile. We had to consider the views of the people and write a letter in response.

In Art, we have been learning about Eguptian clothing. We discovered that the Egyptians wore heavily jewelled collars, which were covered in precious jewels, gold and silver. We also learnt that some of the collars were so heavy, they had to have a counterweight down their backs to hold them in place. The children used a range of coloured card to create intricate designs for their own collars.

As the new term begins, we will be venturing into the past and looking at the Ancient Egyptians. In science, we will be studying Light and Electricity and we look forward to sharing another fantastic book with our whole class reader.
